Is volunteering right for me?
Every volunteer is important, even if you simply support us for one event. We would like to see volunteers quickly advance to a USCG license, divemaster, instructor or crew position as rapidly as possible. But if you can only volunteer for one event, or choose to volunteer as a telecommuting volunteer to edit video, reconcile accounts, build web pages or conduct board meetings, that is okay too.
We would like to see our volunteers operate their own programs and teach or organize events for summer employment. We will ask volunteers to teach other volunteers under the oversight of a master instructor so that they can gain as much experience teaching as possible. Volunteers may find themselves teaching another volunteer, on their first day, shortly after they learn a skill. We want the least experienced instructor to teach as often as possible, even if they are still learning basic skills themselves.
You trade volunteer time as community volunteer, sports instructor, tutor or crew to get free or reduced rate sports instruction.
Care for a sunset cruise?
Our events web site http://meetup.com/saildive is a place for people to find casual events usually lasting for just a few hours. On our local trips we include light instruction, a meal, drinks, swimming and people simply lying in the sun on a boat.
To encourage volunteers to become independent instructors we will give them a petty cash fund and an expense account along with $1/hr rental rates for boats and equipment while they teach or learn.
