Opening a sailing or sports school - Are you qualified?
When a donation of equipment is made to a nonprofit, that equipment is owned by the public.
As a volunteer of FAST, if you receive management of a boat or sports equipment donated to FAST, and you are the caretaker of that equipment, you do not obtain personal ownership of that property, just the management of it.
You can not re-sell equipment except to make a donation to an IRS registered nonprofit. Equipment must be used and disposed of according to IRS guidelines.
When you send us a proposal for the operations and maintenance of the vessel and sign an affidavit of responsibility, we will help boat or equipment donors to find a place for their donations and give them a tax deductible receipt for their donation.

With sports, it takes no special qualifications for a Dad to teach his son, two friends to work out the rules of a game on a playground or a volunteer to help another.
People have been teaching each other sailing, swimming and many other sports for thousands of years before the commercial idea of certification was invented.
If you want to get serious about your sailing in this country, the USCG has the only certification that matters. (We can help you obtain a USCG license)
When you teach someone, you both get smarter
When you are a student, you learn things to your own satisfaction. When you teach another person, your planning and presentation of the lesson reinforce the material to you through the process of teaching.
Becoming an instructor is a very effective way to re-inforce information you have learned. This is why we encourage people to teach as soon as possible, even minutes after learning something.
Be honest with your students
Hitting a baseball, learning how to swim, hoisting sails, handling winches, observing sea conditions and safety in sports are reasons why you should have somebody experienced with you for sports instruction, especially sports that can be dangerous.
Most sailing schools use students who have graduated from basic sailing to teach basic sailing.
You don't always need to be an "old salt" to teach basic sailing skills, just be honest with your capabilities.
With our open records format, a student can easily check the logs of any instructor and view all relevant history. Instructors and students together, decide if the instructor is qualified to teach.
We have instructors from beginners up to USCG masters.
Mates have it all
The volunteers that we describe as "mates", (click on the volunteer tab for more information) have already completed all of the requirements to start teaching their own classes and operating their own events, independently.
They have budgets, training materials, and can take credit cards and issue receipts from a IRS registered nonprofit.
Mates may be seasoned masters or may have never been on a boat in their life, but yet they posses all of the tools to open and operate their own programs.
Anyone can operate their own sports programs.
When you become a mate, you can open your own school using our methods and materials.
